The Only Gray · Pepper Place
Gray
Thirty-four years, two coasts, and a very good reason for being here.

Ashley Miles and her daughter Holland.
The short version
He has been doing this since he was fourteen.
Pageants first, then friends, then family, then anyone who would sit still. He turned professional in Atlanta in 1992 and never stopped. In the years that followed his work appeared in editorials, campaigns and celebrity hair — all while he built his reputation from behind the chair at other people’s salons.
Palm Beach, then California, then Costa Rica through the pandemic — where he lived, and from which he flew back to his chairs on both coasts rather than give either of them up. Which tells you most of what you need to know about how he likes to live.
Birmingham
He didn’t arrive here. He came back.
Birmingham has had a piece of his heart since 1997, when clients here first started making sure he had a reason to keep coming back. For years he made the trip one weekend a month — and those weekends were anything but quiet. Appointments filled fast, clients spread the word, and a Birmingham following grew right alongside his career in Atlanta and on the west coast.
So when he made Birmingham his home base in 2023, he wasn’t starting over. He was coming back to a community that had been asking for him for nearly thirty years — and he was genuinely humbled by how warmly they welcomed him home.

Why he came home
To be closer to his mother in Georgia.
When she’s able, she still comes and sits in the studio while he works. She takes the chair by the window and watches her baby boy “make magic.” She is, of course, Gray’s biggest fan.
He still makes his way back to the west coast for a select few clients — but these days, being near family means more.
How he works
Every first visit starts with a complimentary consultation.
He needs his hands in your hair — to feel what’s actually going on with it, and to weigh what you want against what’s really there. Then he’ll give you an honest recommendation on both.
Everything depends on your hair's HEALTH…
