The Only Gray · Pepper Place

What I use.

These are the three I reach for most, and the ones I keep having to explain in the chair. If you buy through the links on this page I earn a small commission — it costs you nothing extra, and I only put my name on things I actually use on my clients.

R+Co Metal Detector detox shampoo, the bottle Gray uses to clear Birmingham's hard water out of his clients' hair

Metal Detector

Hair lost its shine? Color fading too quickly and/or going brassy? Won't hold a curl — or frizzes the second you leave the house?

Here in Birmingham, the culprit is in the water — heavy metals, hard minerals, and yes, even microplastics. They dull your shine and pull your color brassy fast. Metal Detector clears them out — so your color stays true and your shine comes back. And stays back.

R+Co Centerpiece 10-in-1 conditioning spray, the bottle Gray keeps taking off his own retail shelf

Centerpiece

I keep robbing this off my own retail shelf to use on people in the chair, which tells you everything. It's the one that makes hair feel like hair again. It's a conditioning spray that does about ten jobs at once — it detangles, knocks the frizz down, puts moisture and shine back, and strengthens the hair while it does it. Sea buckthorn oil, vitamins A and E, hyaluronic acid. Mist it through damp hair before anything else, layer it under whatever you style with, or use it on second-day hair to bring it back. It goes on light, so fine hair can wear it too.

R+Co On A Cloud bond building repair oil masque, the tube Gray reaches for on hair that has been lifted and heat-styled

On A Cloud

If your hair's been through it — highlights, heat, all of it — this is what I reach for. The whole line works together, and it puts the strength back. It's a bond-builder, built on baobab oil-protein. The shampoo cleans gently instead of stripping what little is left. The masque does the real repair — it goes down into the fibre and rebuilds the bonds that lifting and hot tools broke. The leave-in oil carries that repair through the day and seals the cuticle while you style. If you're going lighter, or you're on hot tools most days, this one is not optional.

R+Co

It's not just about my clients looking great when they leave the salon today — it's about their colour and texture and shine continuing until they're back in my chair. I do not cut corners.
